Accessible dashboards

Accessibility is more than compliance

Meeting WCAG 2.2 Level AA requirements is essential, but accessibility is not just a legal obligation. Accessible dashboards are easier to navigate, understand and use for all users. Follow the accessible data guidance and the dashboard-specific requirements below.

Make sure dashboards:

  • provide accessible alternatives to chart data
  • make interactive controls keyboard accessible
  • make important information visible without requiring users to hover
  • use clear headings and structure to help users navigate the page
  • provide clear labels and summaries
  • do not communicate information through colour alone
  • make active filters and selections easy to identify
  • ensure text, controls and charts remain usable at different zoom levels

Where possible, test dashboards with assistive technologies.

Follow guidance on meaningful link text so users can understand the purpose of a link without relying on surrounding content.
